Hi All! My best friend has had a partial thyroidectomy and is feeling permanently tired and sluggish. She is also gaining weight, which is troubling her.
Am I right in thinking of her like a hypo type now?- I offered to do some research into diet and or alternative therapy for her to help alleviate her symptoms,- or prevent further complications in later life, due to mismanagement now.
Anyone got any ideas, help? thanks in advance, jana

Re: alternative treatment/diet info?
Sat, March 11, 2006 - 9:06 AMHi there! I've been dealing with hypo for almost a year and a half now (probably longer). I'm a research freak, so I'm always looking for something, too. Especially because I also have Epstein-Barr, which also causes nasty fatigue and other symptoms. I've had some great luck with acupuncture and herbs, although I think it's the EBV that it has most of the effect on. Many people take Tyrosine, which is supposed to help with thyroid health and hormone production. I think, though, that the greatest effect will happen from thyroid supplements. I hope your friend is taking them if she needs them, and it sounds like she does! I have been doing a little research on types of thyroid meds, and it appears that a lot of people would do better with T3 supplementation included in their treatment if their lab tests look normal but they still feel bad. Must thyroid meds only contain T4 (your natural hormone contains both T3 and T4). Cytomel, is a synthetic T3 supplement that many people take with their other meds and a lot of people report feeling much better. The problem is that a lot of doctors think T4 is enough. A patients lab results will look normal from the T4 alone, and a lot of doctors like to use lab results exclusively. I am so lucky--my endocrinologist actually put me directly on Armour thyroid, which is a natural thyroid supplement (not synthetic). It contains all the thyroid hormones that our own thyroid would produce. A lot of docs, tho, are uninformed about Armour or similar supplements and will not prescribe it. Check out Mary Shomon's website at:
www.thyroid-info.com
Her site is really comprehensive on both medical and natural/alternative approaches.
By the way, please note that I'm not a doctor or medical person. This info is all to the best of my knowledge, and I encourage you to do your own research to verify any information that you feel is useful.
And may I say that you are an _awesome_ friend!!! Good luck!!

Re: alternative treatment/diet info?
Tue, March 14, 2006 - 6:17 AMhi mindy, thanks so much for all your useful info. Yes I have been trying to persuade her to go to acupuncture. I am having always great success with TCM for any of my ailments. (I even avoided major surgery this winter, phew!). But the trouble is, she is so permanently tired and overburdened that she feels she cannot deal with another thing..
I will definitely encourage her to take both the supplements,- you are not the first person to recommend this to me since I posted my request for info!
so I thought I try and get her to adjust a little at home, and so gain a little more strength, to then clear her (mind) and diary to make room for acupuncture. I am frustrated that she does not understand that with this "one more thing" she might gain strength rather than lose it.. but when a person is overburdened they cannot always see straight..
I have a question for you: do you know anything about supplementing with virgin coconut oil ?
coconutdiet.com/thyroid_health.htm
it looks so simple, could it be effective?
I try to also take blood types into account, which will affect the range of possible diets and exercise,- do you know any about that? (might interest you though).
I have made a little collection of thyroid related internet sites, let me know if you are still looking for more to read and I'll send the links to you.
I want to congratulate you for taking initiative for your own health, especially as it is making you very tired,- as we can see with my friend, and she is no couch potato, it is not to be taken for granted. And I want to thank you for your compliment, I guess it takes one to know one ;-)
