Hey all. I'm new to this tribe, but I've had my diagnosis for Hashimoto's for a long, long time. It looks like I'm heading for a thyroidectomy pretty soon, and I'm trying to collect anecdotal experiences. I know everyone's experience is different, but I don't believe the whole "You may experience mild discomfort for a few days" crap. They slice open my throat, root around, and cut something out. I'd say that's well past mild discomfort.
Anyone had this surgery? Anything I should know about? I've heard about facial bruising and difficulty lifting your head for a while after surgery, and I know about the possibility of parathyroid gland and vocal chord damage...
It blows, but at least I'll have a badass scar.

Re: Surgery anyone?
04/30
My best friend had it done years ago. Don't really recall her experiences from it, but know she had a sore throat for a while, covered up the scar for a few weeks, then it dissipated and is barely visible.
Did you get it done?

Re: Surgery anyone?
08/17I had surgery 2 1/2 years ago. I didn't have any facial bruising and I was able to speak right after surgery - I do know a couple of folks whose voices were altered after surgery, but that wasn't the case w/me.
I remember I got dizzy really easily for about a month afterwards, but that could have been the anaesthetic.
As for the scar, I put a LOT of sunscreen on it during the day (still do) and I used 100% vitamin e oil @night. Mederma works as well, tho it smells like onions.
best of luck, M -

Re: Surgery anyone?
12/06I had a total thyroidectomy on April 30, 2003. My surgeon and doc were like, "you'll have the surgery and then everything willl be great!". You are right to question this pollyanna attitude. I suggest you go to www.thyca.org. There you will get all your questions answered. Feel free to email me also. It has become apparant that getting your thyroid (or lack of one) levels correct is a lifelong maintainance process. Good luck!

Re: Surgery anyone?
10/12I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in February of 2003. I was wondering why you are having surgery. I was told, even though my thyroid is dead, surgery is not required. I do have several nodules on both lobes that I have had biopsied. I am, of course, on thyroid supplement. I have trouble swallowing and cannot swallow even medium size pills, and you can forget about big ones. I have a hard enough time with the supplement which is only 88mcg. I started out on 175mcg when diagnosed and with in about a year and a half was down to the 88mcg.
I am plagued with exhaustion. Simple daily tasks such as doing dishes, vacumming, or laundry wear me out. I do suffer from other medical issues though and my research has found that many people suffer from all the same things as I do.
