http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com
I talks about the need for adrenal support and the use of desiccated thyroid instead of synthetic T4.

Grave's Disease general questions

Does anyone who has Grave's know if we're candidates for laser eye surgery? One opthamologist told me I was, another said I wasn't.

If any of you have had it for many years have you noticed that it gets better w/ medication, I-33 treatment, a special diet or anything else that might improve it?

Have any of you had eye surgery to correct it or have heard any positive or horror stories of anyone that has had it? It sounds risky, but I have been contemplating it.

Does anyone else have problems w/ tearing up during the day due to Grave's? Do you do anything special to correct it?

radioactive iodine treatment?

(sorry if there's already a thread on this topic)

I'm considering getting the radiation treatiment done for my hyperactive thyroid (of 3+ years) very soon. I have horrible insurance coverage and only found 1 facility that would even accept this plan.

If anyone here has had this procedure done, could you give me a little information on it? I'm primarily interested in knowing a few key things... such as the price of the procedure (including any meds that go along with it)... and whether you have to take pregnazone (spelling?) before/during/after the treatment, and if you gained significant weight from the pregnazone?

Any guidance is much appreciated.

I ws suprised to see a tribe for Thyroidism. I knew I wasn't the only one out there who has Hypo-thyroidism. I just never met anyone else who has it.

I was diagnosed ten years ago and was automatically put on levothroid without much explanation why. Ever since then, I've been looking around for information off and on.

thyroidism and snoring

Does anyone have a problem with snoring? I've always been a snorer, but since I have developed the thyroid problem, I now snore worse (my wife has kicked me out to my own room). If so, have any of your doctors recommended a sleep study? I am asking this because I was just at my Dr the other day and he said that my TSH levels were good with the Synthroid I am taking. But I still feel tired and can't concentrate or get motivated on anything, plus I am depressed half the time. I told him this and he gave me a test and thinks that I have ADHD. My wife and I agree that he has to be wrong because I never had these problems before. How do you just develop ADHD? Anyway, he switched me from Celexa to Wellbutrin and put me on Strattera. I guess I will give it some time and see. But anyway, back to the snoring, has anyone else developed sleep apnea from your thyroid problem?

What do my lab results mean?

I have had Grave's Disaease for 6 years now and have always left it in the hands of my doctors. So I do not know what the labs mean. I kinda have an idea though. TSH normal levels are .350-5.0. Does hyperthyroidism occur when you are below the .350? My level results were .869 a few days ago. I know that is in the normal range, but where exactly do I fall in that range. Can anyone help me to understand this better? I just do not feel well and don't know why. If it's my Grave's Disease or something else. So any advise or links to where I can get some answers would be great! Thanks!

Surgery anyone?

Hey all. I'm new to this tribe, but I've had my diagnosis for Hashimoto's for a long, long time. It looks like I'm heading for a thyroidectomy pretty soon, and I'm trying to collect anecdotal experiences. I know everyone's experience is different, but I don't believe the whole "You may experience mild discomfort for a few days" crap. They slice open my throat, root around, and cut something out. I'd say that's well past mild discomfort.

Anyone had this surgery? Anything I should know about? I've heard about facial bruising and difficulty lifting your head for a while after surgery, and I know about the possibility of parathyroid gland and vocal chord damage...

It blows, but at least I'll have a badass scar.

Hi All! My best friend has had a partial thyroidectomy and is feeling permanently tired and sluggish. She is also gaining weight, which is troubling her.

Am I right in thinking of her like a hypo type now?- I offered to do some research into diet and or alternative therapy for her to help alleviate her symptoms,- or prevent further complications in later life, due to mismanagement now.

Anyone got any ideas, help? thanks in advance, jana

Right time for the right vitamin....

As if just taking a pill at the same time every single day is not annoying enough, we must also be concerned with what we are mixing it with. Of course we take our thyroid meds on an empty stomach. I have also read that soy and dairy must not be consumed within 4 hours of taking the pill. Annoying! And hard to keep track of! (well, for me!)

Here is my issue:
I do take my pill every morning. My question is...when do I take vitamins (and which multi vitamin!?) to get the maximum results? At bedtime? How much calcium should I be taking? And when? And, a special question for the ladies.....once a month my energy is low low low due to my Aunt Flo, should I add B12 or iron??? AND WHEN?

I am familiar with the ThyCa site. Love it. But sometimes I need to ask questions to real people instead of going thru all the research. I tend to get sidetracked!

Thanks everyone! It's tough not having a thyroid!

A good place to find information on thyroid, and other endocrine
disorders, is www.thyroidmanager.org . Its highly technical, but it is
pretty readable, even for the average lay person.
Fairly easy to search also.

Written by doctors, and is generally accepted easily as a resource by our doctors, in discussion.

True, much concerning thyroid is still under debate, as so much is not yet known. Even on this site, most of us will find things we disagree with. But ya gotta start somewhere. ;)

hi, im a new member. i was in the hospital a month ago with complications with my auto immune disorder, ITP, and in the blood tests done there i was told the thryroid #'s were very low. no one seemed concerned but i do plan on going to the doctor in a couple of weeks to talk about this.

i have been blaming these symptoms on my blood disorder but could the be from my thyroid not working properly?

my hair is falling out(they said it was because i just gave birth but my baby is 3 now and its still falling out)

my scalp hurt to touch

i am super tired almost all the time

i have always been overwieght but i have gained a tremendous amount of wieght with out changing my eating habits.

i know nothing about the thyroid therefore i dont know what questions i should ask my doctor. i would appreciate any advice

thanks, angie

I'm new to this tribe (as of today, and specifically for this question):

Do you tribesters have discussions about soy and thyroidism? I've heard now for years, and recently read a detailed article about how too much soy can badly effect the thyroid gland, and lead to the side effects of chronic fatigue, metabolism fluxuations, and all the other stuff associated with thyroid disease.

Are there some good summaries of this issue that you know of? Can you post them? I think everyone on this tribe should no about this topic if they (you) don't already...

Thanks!

I was just diagonosed with hashimotos disease (autoimmune thyroiditis) two months ago. This summer I was hyperthyroid and miserable. Now I have switched over to hypo. I just started taking synthoid but really think some serious adjustments are due. I sleep alot and I can't keep my mind on anything for any length of time. I hope this gets better as the Dr. adjusts my meds. I am glad to join a group of people who can relate.

... a while ago, i thought, "i should start a thyroid tribe", and never got my ass in gear. (yes, i'm hypo ;) ~ it's good to see someone did!

it's one of those illnesses that's so hard to get good info, support, and doctors for, so it's great to be able to connect with each other for advice/support/referrals/etc. i know i'm just brimming with random information at this point....
:)

cheers,

I was diagnosed a year ago (this past weekend was my anniversary) w/thyroid cancer and had my thyroid removed w/surgery +radiation. Physically I'm back in shape - lost all the weight I gained (yoga +the Zone diet) and the scar on my throat is hardly visible (lots of cocoa butter + sunscreen). But I still need 10-12 hours+ sleep/night. I'm taking a medical leave of absence from my job because I'm that exhausted all the time, even tho my levoxyl strength keeps going up every other month.

Is this situation familiar to anyone? Anything I can do to combat the constant tiredness?
